The Department of Labor & Industries is currently seeking an Industrial Hygiene Consultant to work with employers and employees, preventing the occurrence of injuries and illnesses resulting from exposure to hazardous workplace conditions and from hazardous work practices.

As an L&I Industrial Hygiene Consultant - Industrial Hygienist you will perform routine and complex work place surveys or evaluations for all types of occupational health hazards. Evaluations or surveys are conducted in all industries to determine compliance with the Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) worker safety and health standards to prevent occupational illness and disease.

Your experience in the following disciplines’ could make you a competitive applicant:

  • Conducting technically complex workplace surveys for employers of all sizes, independently and as part of a consultation team.

  • Identify, evaluating and recommending controls for occupational health hazards, including chemical, biological, physical and ergonomic hazards.

  • Completing detailed reports for all field surveys.

  • Properly completing departmental forms and shipment of field samples to the laboratory. Assessing lab results as they relate to permissible exposure limits and actual employee exposure, including research of health and safety hazards of various chemical, biological, physical and ergonomic agents.

  • Communicating verbally and in writing with employers and employees on the effects of hazards, regulations pertaining to the industry and methods of abatement to reduce or eliminating these hazards.

  • Assisting employers with written programs to ensure compliance with the WAC regulations and other industry and consensus standards.

  • Developing and presenting workshops and training programs for employers and associations on specific hygiene issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree involving major study in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or related field.

 

And


Three years experience as an Industrial Hygienist.
A Master’s degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for one year of industrial hygiene experience.

 

Knowledge of :

The WIN system, LINIIS system and Referral Tracking System for completing reports and tracking work activities is helpful.

 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge and use of exposure monitoring equipment.

  • Utilize observation, measurement and interviewing to assess conditions.

  • Conduct onsite consultations identifying hazards.

  • Assess workplace safety and health programs.

  • Provide training and education for both employers and employees to reduce and prevent injuries and occupational hazards.

Special Note:

  • This position will require travel in the course completing job duties.

  • Prior to any new appointment into L&I, a background check, including criminal record history, will be conducted.

  • Employees driving on state business must have a valid driver’s license. Employees driving a privately owned vehicle on state business must have liability insurance on the privately-owned vehicle.

Job

This position will support site review tasks, site assessment tasks, data collection tasks, sampling and monitoring tasks, and other field and office tasks as assigned. The fieldwork will involve the assessment of hazardous materials, regulated building materials, water intrusion and fungal contamination. The employee will be introduced to basic skills in project and/or task management.  This is anticipated to be an “On-Call”/Hourly position, with significant travel requirements.

 

Accountabilities

  • Collect, compile, and present data both verbally and in writing

  • Perform field work; i.e. industrial hygiene sampling and documentation

  • Communicate effectively with AMEC project team, client, subcontractors, and

  • manager

  • Provide support in areas such as site characterization and remediation

  • Prepare written documentation of field conditions and project summary reports

  • Learn company methods, practices, and procedures

Knowledge

  • BA/BS in science

  • 2-5 years environmental or industrial hygiene consulting experience

  • computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Minimum of one year experience in Portland area market

  • AHERA/Asbestos and Lead abatement / Demolition experience preferred

  • Knowledge in chemistry, physics, biology, safety and industrial hygiene

  • The candidate must be able to apply analytical or scientific thinking to define and solve problems and be able to execute field and office tasks
