Changes in industrial practice in response to occupational health risks are influenced by a variety of internal and external factors. This course addresses the question of how such changes are effectively implemented. In addition to discussing regulatory and statutory precedents and framework, we will examine other methods leading to the recognition and subsequent reduction of health risks including dissemination of scientific research, media reporting, product safety initiatives and personal activism. Case studies concerning asbestos, ergonomics, combustible dust, and manganese will be examined.
